Case History:

Property owner purchased an old mill building once owned by a furniture company in the 1800's. The company once heated the entire mill with cheap heavier oils (4-6). Evidence of oil excretion from an embankment into an abutting river caused local DEP officials to discover 3 large leaking storage tanks. A local contractor and Clean Harbors did the initial response and later, excavation at the sight.

UET was recommended and selected by the other contractors as the vendor of remediation equipment and on going monitoring, operation, and maintenance services. UET tested the effectiveness of a ProBailer system in recovering product and encountered several problems as heavier oil was encountered. These problems included fowling of sensors and general problems stemming from the viscosity of the heavier oil (difficulty mobilizing it).

These series of events brought about the inspiration to change UET's sensor technologies and incorporate heating controls at various locations in the system. UET has adopted this practice at all heavy oil remediation sites since and has now added single phase (product only) extraction options. UET remained the remediation contractor at this site for 9 years and successful achieved a "no further action" ruling/status for the site. UET then continued to provide well monitoring activities for another year with no indication of a need to continue remediation. The site has since been deconstructed.

Site Configuration:

UET's System operated in 7 monitoring wells and 2 (6 inch) recovery wells that contained free product. UET customized an in sit to system housed in a vault. The vault configuration included: a pump, PLC controls, VOD sensors, heating controls, oil water separation, remote monitoring, and product collection.
